Tavistock Cream Tea Week begins on June 21st, and this annual celebration is a fitting and delicious tribute to our historic town, which is the undisputed "Home of the Cream Tea."
Whether you're a devout 'cream first' devotee or firmly in the 'jam first' camp, there's no denying the quintessential loveliness of a delicious cream tea. It’s a cherished British tradition, and its roots run incredibly deep right here in Tavistock.
Over a thousand years ago, in 997 AD, legend has it that after the Benedictine Abbey in Tavistock suffered a devastating Viking raid, the workers tasked with its restoration were rewarded for their efforts. Ordulf, Earl of Devon, offered them a sustaining meal: bread served with rich clotted cream and sweet strawberry preserves, all made by the Abbey's monks. This act of kindness and sustenance is widely believed to be the very genesis of the cream tea we adore today.
To celebrate this legacy during the upcoming Cream Tea Week, pop into our Flapjackery shop in Tavistock for our very own version of a cream tea! Forget the scone for a moment. At Flapjackery, we're known for our incredible range of traditional flapjacks, and we're offering a piece of that goodness, piled high with a dollop of Langage Farm Clotted Cream and a dollop of luscious Waterhouse Fayre Strawberry Jam. It's a truly local, utterly delicious, and unique Flapjackery cream tea that pays homage to our heritage.
What's more, our delicious flapjacks are gluten-free, so everyone can join in the celebration!
If you can't make it to our shop, you can still bring the Flapjackery joy home! Grab a piece of your favourite traditional flapjack and layer on that cream and jam.
Tavistock Cream Tea Week is a fabulous, town-wide event! We all get involved, competing for the coveted title of 'Best Cream Tea,' which often showcases innovative and exciting new takes on the classic.
Fingers crossed our Flapjackery Tavistock shop is the winner this year for our unique flapjack cream tea!
